Hot Stone Massage in Fenton, MO: Hot stone massage uses smooth, heated stones that are placed along specific points on your body. The stones are also held by the therapist while providing the massage. The localized heat and weight of the stones provide relaxation of the muscles and allow the therapist to apply deeper pressure to areas of your body without causing discomfort.
Basalt river rocks are typically used because of their smooth texture (from the river’s current) and they retain heat very well. As the therapist preps for your massage, the stones are placed in a professional stone heater until they reach a temperature between 110 and 130 degrees Fahrenheit. The heated stones are then placed along your body to energetically balance the mind and body. Swedish massage therapy techniques are used during the massage which include long strokes combined with kneading and rolling.

What to Expect During a Hot Stone Massage
After the heated stones are placed strategically along your body, it may take a few minutes for the heat to penetrate the sheet or towel so you can discern whether the stones are too hot. While the points of stone placement may vary depending on the areas of muscle tension and your health history, the stones are generally placed in the following areas:
- Along both sides of the spine
- In the palms of your hand
- On your legs, abdomen, feet
The therapist will then apply massage oil to the skin and while holding the stones in both hands, will use gliding movements to move the stones along the muscles. The therapist uses Swedish massage techniques on the back, legs, neck, and shoulders while the stones are in place or after they have been removed.
